FAQs

Where is this tour located?

The lakes lie about 100 km southeast of Cusco in the Quispicanchis province. Most tours start at Pacchanta, a small Andean community around 4,300–4,400 m above sea level.

How long does the trek take and how difficult is it?

The full-day tour covers approximately 10–13 km at altitudes above 4,300 m. Expect around 5–6 hours of hiking with some uphill sections, making it moderately to very challenging depending on your fitness and altitude adaptation.

Do I need a guide?

While you can attempt the hike independently, it’s highly recommended to go with a local guide. Trails can be confusing, weather is unpredictable, and having expert support greatly enhances safety .

When is the best season to go?

The dry season—from May through September—is ideal. June to August offer the most stable and clear conditions, ensuring the lakes’ colors shine and the paths remain clear.

What’s included in a typical tour?

Full‑day options generally include early hotel pickup around 4–5 AM, round‑trip transport from Cusco, breakfast, lunch, bilingual guide, first‑aid kit and oxygen, walking poles, entrance fees, and a chance to soak in hot springs back in Pacchanta.

How long is the drive from Cusco to the start of the hike?

Expect a scenic 3–3.5‑hour drive along paved and dirt roads to reach Pacchanta at high altitude before beginning your trek.

Are there any amenities on the trek?

Basic restrooms are available at Pacchanta before departure. There are no facilities along the hike, so it’s smart to bring your own supplies.

What should I pack and wear?

Layered clothing is essential to handle cold mornings and midday sun. Bring a waterproof jacket, trekking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, gloves, plenty of water and snacks, and a daypack.

Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes—you’re trekking above 4,300 m. Acclimatize by spending a couple days in Cusco (3,400 m), stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat light, and consider coca tea or altitude pills.

Can I ride a horse for part of the trek?

In some cases, local providers offer horse rentals that can carry you partway, easing the physical strain—though this varies depending on tour and availability .

Is swimming in the lakes allowed?

No—due to cultural respect and frigid glacial temperatures, swimming is neither allowed nor advisable.

Are hot springs included?

Yes. Many tours include a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs of Pacchanta after the hike.

How many people are on these tours?

Group sizes usually range from 10–16 travelers. Some operators also offer private tours for smaller groups or individuals .

Can I combine this with other tours?

Yes, there are multi-day options that blend the 7 Lakes trek with visits to Rainbow Mountain and other high‑altitude adventures.

Is it worth the effort?

Absolutely—trekkers describe it as an unforgettable, off‑the‑beaten‑path journey with unparalleled scenery, vibrant lakes, cultural immersion, and remote Andean landscapes
