FAQs

How difficult is this trek?

This is a moderately challenging trek due to the high altitude, with some steep sections. Proper acclimatization in Cusco (1–2 days recommended) is essential to avoid altitude sickness.

What is the weather like?

Days are cool with temperatures between 8°C and 15°C (46°F to 59°F), while nights can drop below freezing, reaching −5°C (23°F) or lower. The dry season from May to October offers the best trekking conditions.

What should I pack?

Wear layers, including thermal base layers, fleece, and a waterproof jacket. Good trekking boots, gloves, a warm hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag for cold weather are also recommended.

Is it better to go with a tour?

Yes. Organized tours provide transportation, meals, professional guides, camping gear, and local support. They also handle entrance fees and ensure safety on the route.

Do I need a permit?

You do not need a government-issued permit like for the Inca Trail, but there is a small fee to enter the Ausangate region, usually included in organized tours.

Is it safe to trek in February or March?

February is part of the rainy season, and conditions can be unstable. Trails may be muddy or even closed due to landslides. March is better but still considered shoulder season. The best time is from May to October.

What are the risks, and how can I prepare?

The main risk is altitude sickness. To prevent it, acclimate in Cusco, stay hydrated, eat light, and consider coca tea. Cold weather and changing conditions are other challenges, so pack accordingly.

Can beginners do this trek?

Beginners in good physical condition can complete it with the help of a guide, but it is not recommended for first-time hikers with no experience at high altitude.

What kind of landscapes will I see?

You’ll pass through colorful mountain valleys, turquoise lakes, herds of alpacas and llamas, and have stunning views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks, especially Ausangate itself.

Are there alternative treks in the same area?

Yes. Longer versions of the Ausangate trek (3–6 days) exist and can include the Rainbow Mountain. Some agencies also offer one-day hikes for travelers with very limited time.

When is the best time to hike Ausangate?

From May to October is ideal. These are the dry months, with clearer skies and fewer rain-related issues. June, July, and August are peak season with the best weather.
