Itinerary – Choquequirao Trek 4 days

We start our adventure early in the morning with a scenic drive from Cusco to the town of Cachora. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a traditional breakfast with incredible Andean views before continuing to Capuliyoc, the official starting point of the trek. From here, you’ll get your first jaw-dropping glimpse of the Apurímac Canyon and the snow-capped Padreyoc peak.

At Capuliyoc, we meet our team of muleteers and pack horses, who will take care of carrying the camping gear. Then, we begin our hike descending along a beautiful trail that skirts the edge of the canyon. The views are constant, and you might even spot the outline of Choquequirao in the distance.

We spend our first night in Chiquisca, a warm village nestled in the canyon — the perfect place to relax and recharge.

  • Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours

  • Distance: 8 km

  • Elevation at camp: 1,930 m

  • Weather: Warm with some mosquitoes (bring repellent)

After a good breakfast, we head downhill for about 30 minutes to reach Rosalina Beach, right by the river. From there, we begin a long uphill hike through warm terrain all the way to Marampata, a highland village with stunning views of the Choquequirao ruins.

We’ll set up camp here and, if the skies are clear, witness an unforgettable sunset over the ancient city. With some luck, you may even spot condors gliding above the cliffs — a sacred symbol of the Andes.

  • Hiking time: Around 7 hours

  • Distance: 14 km

  • Elevation at camp: 2,850 m

  • Weather: Warm during the day, cooler in the evening

We wake up early to catch the sunrise over Choquequirao — a truly magical moment. Afterward, we enjoy a guided tour of the site, exploring temples, terraces, ritual spaces, and irrigation systems that speak to the brilliance of Inca engineering.

Although only about 30% of Choquequirao has been uncovered, it already rivals Machu Picchu in both size and mystery. Excavations are ongoing, so every visit offers something new.

After the tour, we begin our return journey, descending back to Rosalina Beach and then climbing up to Chiquisca for our final night under the stars.

  • Hiking time: Approx. 6 hours

  • Distance: 14 km

  • Elevation at camp: 1,930 m

  • Weather: Warm, with mosquitoes (don’t forget that repellent)

Our last trekking day starts with an uphill walk back to Capuliyoc. It’s a steady climb, but the incredible canyon views and snowy peaks in the distance make every step worth it. You might even catch a final sighting of the majestic condor.

Once we arrive at the trailhead, our private transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. It’s the perfect end to an epic journey through the Vilcabamba mountain range.

  • Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours

  • Distance: 8 km

  • Final elevation: 2,850 m

  • Weather: Dry and sunny

Frequently Asked Questions About the Choquequirao Trek 4 days

How difficult is the Choquequirao Trek?

This trek is considered moderate to challenging. Some sections are steep, especially when climbing to Marampata. No technical skills are needed, but a decent fitness level and spending a couple of days in Cusco to acclimatize really help.

Do I need hiking experience?

Not necessarily, but it helps. If you’ve done long walks or treks before, you’ll be comfortable. The path is well-marked, and your guide will be there to support you every step of the way.

FAQs

Can I get altitude sickness?

Yes, especially around 2,800 to 3,000 meters. That’s why we recommend arriving in Cusco a day or two before the trek. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and go at your own pace.

What’s the highest altitude during the trek?

The highest points are around 2,850 meters at Capuliyoc and Marampata, and about 3,050 meters at Choquequirao itself.

How far is the entire trek?

You’ll hike about 44 kilometers (27 miles) over four days. Each day involves several hours of hiking — the longest day takes around 7 hours.

Is there a lot of uphill and downhill?

Yes. Expect steep descents and climbs, especially between Capuliyoc and Rosalina Beach. It’s tough, but the landscapes make every step worth it.

Are there toilets and showers?

Campsites have basic toilet tents, and some spots offer cold-water showers. It’s rustic but clean and well-maintained.

What kind of food is included?

You’ll get fresh, hot meals prepared by our cook — soups, rice, meat, veggies, and snacks. We can also prepare vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free meals if you let us know in advance.

Is drinking water available?

Yes. Starting from the first lunch, we provide boiled and filtered water. Just bring a refillable bottle or hydration pack.

What camping equipment is included?

We provide spacious tents for two people, sleeping mats, and a dining tent with tables and chairs. Sleeping bags and trekking poles can be rented separately.

What should I pack?

Bring a small daypack, hiking boots, layers for hot and cold weather, a rain jacket or poncho, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, toiletries, and any personal medication. We’ll send a full packing list after booking.

Do I carry all my stuff?

No. You’ll just carry your daypack. Our muleteers will carry up to 7 kg (15 lbs) of your gear — sleeping bag, clothes, etc.

How is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?

It’s much less crowded and still partly hidden by the jungle. Many travelers say it feels more authentic and adventurous. While Machu Picchu is famous, Choquequirao is still a secret gem.

When is the best time to go?

April to October is the dry season and ideal for trekking. During the rainy season (November to March), trails can get muddy and slippery — but with the right gear, it’s still possible.

Can I continue on to Machu Picchu from Choquequirao?

Yes, there’s a longer 8–9 day expedition that links the two sites. But this 4-day trek is a round trip that starts and ends in Cusco. If you’re interested in the extended version, we can organize it for you.
