We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 3:00 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. to start our adventure to the stunning Humantay Lake. From here, we’ll embark on a scenic 4-hour drive to Soraypampa, located at 3,850 meters (12,631 feet) above sea level. Soraypampa also serves as the first campsite for the famous Salkantay Trek.

7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.

Upon reaching Soraypampa, you’ll enjoy a delicious, hearty breakfast to fuel up for the trek ahead. During breakfast, you’ll be surrounded by the awe-inspiring peaks of Salkantay and Humantay, a perfect introduction to the day’s adventure.

8:15 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

We begin our hike towards Humantay Lake. The trail starts off gently, with around 20 minutes of flat terrain, offering you a chance to ease into the altitude. After that, the path gradually becomes steeper as we continue our ascent. The hike to the lake takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, and while it may be challenging, the stunning views of snow-capped mountains will keep you inspired.

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Arrive at the breathtaking Humantay Lake, sitting at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. Take in the awe-inspiring turquoise waters, framed by the towering peaks of the Andes. You’ll have plenty of time to explore, take photos, and even offer a tribute to the Apus (mountain spirits), if you wish. The peaceful atmosphere and the natural beauty of the lake are truly worth the effort of the hike.

11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

After enjoying the lake, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa. The return hike is much easier, taking about 1.5 hours. You’ll have time to reflect on the beauty of the Andes and maybe even spot some wildlife along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Humantay Lake Tour

What is Humantay Lake?

Humantay Lake is a stunning glacial lake located at the base of the Humantay Mountain in the Andes of Peru. Known for its striking turquoise color, it has become one of the most popular day trips from Cusco.

FAQs

How long is the hike to the lake?

The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours uphill, depending on your pace and how well you are acclimatized. It covers approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) each way and is considered moderately challenging due to the high altitude.

Is it a one-day tour from Cusco?

Yes. Most Humantay Lake tours are full-day excursions departing Cusco early in the morning, around 4:30 AM, and returning by 5:00 PM the same day.

How high is Humantay Lake?

The lake sits at an altitude of around 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level. Because of this elevation, travelers may experience altitude-related symptoms.

Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes. Visitors are encouraged to spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco before the tour to acclimatize. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and sipping coca tea can help prevent altitude sickness.

Can I ride a horse up to the lake?

Yes, horses are available to rent from local community members. They typically carry you most of the way up, but you will still need to hike the final part on foot.

What should I bring?

You should bring warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, comfortable hiking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, gloves, water, snacks, cash for tips or horse rental, and possibly trekking poles if you use them.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season from May to October offers the best weather, with clearer skies and more stable trail conditions. However, it is also the busiest time.

Can children do the hike?

Yes, but only if they are in good physical condition and well-acclimated to the altitude. Some families choose to use horses to help younger kids with the ascent.

Is swimming allowed in the lake?

No. Swimming is not permitted as the lake is considered sacred by local communities and the water is extremely cold due to its glacial origin.

How difficult is the hike?

The trail is moderately to highly difficult due to the steep incline and altitude. While it is not technical, it does require physical effort and good breathing control.

Do I need to book in advance?

In low season, tours can often be booked a day before. During high season (June to August), it is better to reserve your spot a few days in advance.

Is Humantay Lake part of the Salkantay Trek?

Yes. It is a common stop on the first day of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. However, many people visit it as a stand-alone day trip from Cusco.

Are there restrooms on the trail?

Basic toilets are available at Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike. There are no restrooms on the trail itself or near the lake.

How cold is it at the lake?

Temperatures in the morning can be below freezing, especially from May through August. Even during the day, it remains cold at the lake due to the altitude.

Can I hike without a guide?

It is possible but not recommended unless you have private transportation and experience hiking at high altitudes. Tours are safe, convenient, and affordable.

Is the trail crowded?

It can be, especially between June and August. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in April, May, or November, which are shoulder season months.

What precautions should I take for the altitude?

Spend time acclimating in Cusco, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol before the hike, eat light meals, and consider natural remedies like coca tea or altitude medicine.

Can I combine this tour with others?

It is not possible to combine Humantay Lake with other tours on the same day due to the early departure and full-day schedule. However, some multi-day packages include Humantay Lake as part of longer experiences like the Salkantay Trek or overnight adventures.
