What Is the Inca Trail Permit?

The Inca Trail permit is an official document required to hike the Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, one of the most famous treks in the world. This permit is issued by the Peruvian government and is mandatory for all trekkers—no one is allowed on the trail without it, not even solo hikers or locals.

Why Do You Need a Permit for the Inca Trail?

To protect the fragile environment and preserve Inca archaeological sites along the route, the Peruvian authorities have limited the number of people who can hike the trail each day.

How Many Inca Trail Permits Are Available?

  • 500 permits per day

  • This number includes trekkers, guides, cooks, and porters

  • Only about 200 permits per day are available for tourists

Once all permits are booked, no more are released for that date—no exceptions.

When Do Inca Trail Permits Go on Sale?

Permits are released once a year, usually in October for the following year. For example:

  • Permits for 2025 go on sale in October 2024

Some dates, especially May to August, sell out within days or even hours of release.

When Should You Book Your Inca Trail Permit?

  • At least 6 months in advance if you’re traveling in the high season (May–August)

  • For shoulder season (March–April or September–October), 3–5 months ahead may be enough

Last-minute bookings are not possible for the Classic Inca Trail due to the strict permit system.

Who Can Get an Inca Trail Permit?

Only licensed tour operators can buy permits on your behalf. You cannot buy a permit yourself directly from the government.

When you book a trek with a registered agency, they will:

  1. Reserve the permit in your name

  2. Require your passport details

  3. Handle all the official paperwork

What Information Is Required to Book a Permit?

To book your Inca Trail permit, you must provide:

  • Full name (exactly as in your passport)

  • Passport number

  • Nationality

  • Date of birth

  • Gender

Important: Your permit is tied to your passport. If your passport number changes, you must inform your tour operator in advance.

What If You Renew or Lose Your Passport?

If your passport changes after booking, you have two options:

  1. Bring both passports (old and new) when you travel

  2. Update your new passport number with the tour operator before the trek

Failure to do this could result in being denied entry to the trail.

How Much Does the Inca Trail Permit Cost?

Permit prices are included in most tour packages. However, as a reference:

  • Permit cost for tourists: Around $75–$100 USD

  • Student discounts are available with a valid ISIC card or university ID

Note: Prices may vary slightly depending on the tour operator and type of trek.

Do You Need a Permit for Other Treks to Machu Picchu?

No. Only the Classic Inca Trail (4-day trek) and Short Inca Trail (2-day trek) require a permit.

You do not need a permit for these alternatives:

  • Salkantay Trek

  • Lares Trek

  • Inca Jungle Trail

  • Choquequirao Trek

  • Huchuy Qosqo Trek

However, these treks may include Machu Picchu entrance tickets, which are separate from Inca Trail permits.

Is the Inca Trail Open All Year?

No. The Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance and conservation.

Other treks to Machu Picchu remained open during that time, but the Classic Trail was completely off-limits.

Can You Change or Cancel an Inca Trail Permit?

Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Once your permit is issued:

  • You cannot change the date

  • You cannot transfer it to another person

  • You cannot get a refund if you cancel

That’s why it’s important to book carefully and double-check your travel plans and passport info.

Final Tips for Inca Trail Permits

  • Book with a licensed and reputable tour operator

  • Reserve early, especially for high season

  • Prepare your passport details accurately

  • Plan extra days in Cusco to acclimatize before the trek

    • Bring your original passport on the day of the hike—it will be checked at the trail entrance.
